UNIFOIL GENERAL INFORMATION:
UNIFOILS are a set of brilliant, high-gloss metallic foils especially selected for applications to T-Shirts and other textile fabrics using a heat transfer press. UNIFOIL is supplied in Gold,Silver,Copper and five other colors. METHODS OF PREPARATION:
Proper preparation and application of the UNIFOIL system will allow the metallized FOIL finish to adhere only to the desired areas and not to un-printed areas.
Using a heat transfer press, the foil is transferred to the fabric on top of a receptive ink which has been previously applied to the fabric by either a plastisol heat transfer (the transfer should be peeled cold to leave maximum ink on the fabric),or a direct print (a smooth fairly high deposit on top of the fabric with minimal penetration is best). INK REQUIREMENTS:
Unifoil will adhere to many different plastisol ink surfaces. It will also adhere to certain urethane inks, water-based inks, etc. However, adhesion, flexibility, abrasion resistance and washability may be improved for some applications by the addition of UNILON TRANSFER POWDER to plastisol ink.
10-15% of UNION INK'S UNILON Powder ULON-2159 added to any of UNION's ULTRASOFT PLASTISOL PLUS Series may increase the washability and longevity of the foil transfer. Mix only enough for one day. PLASTISOL BASE ADHESIVE:
FOIL-9200PL is a clear plastisol based ink that can be direct screen printed or printed on heat transfer release paper. Screen mesh 61-110T (24-43 metric). Any type of stencil material (film, direct emulsion, etc.) may be used. Heat cure per PLUS Plastisol ink specifications 250-300F (121-148C). TRANSFER APPLICATION:
First, either apply the above mentioned plastisol heat transfers or direct prints to the garment.
Cut the UNIFOIL to the desired shape and place it, color side up, over the area chosen to be "foiled". (If UNIFOIL is not placed over the entire design, cover the exposed plastisol ink areas with release paper to shield them from the hot platen).
Heat press temperature should be 325-350F (163-177C). Pressure: Medium to high. Dwell time: 1-2 seconds over a transfer; 10-15 seconds if applying over a direct print.
Stripping: Allow the foil and fabric to COOL COMPLETELY before peeling.
For best results the color of ink used for the heat transfer or direct print to be "foiled" should either be black or a complimentary color of the foil. This will help mask any chipping or tarnishing of the foil with repeated washings. SUGGESTED WASHING INSTRUCTIONS:
Prints decorated with foil are not as durable as an undecorated print and it should not be expected that they withstand the punishment a regular direct print or transfer can take. Some dulling of the foil is to be expected with laundering, however to minimize this the garment should be handwashed using cool or lukewarm water and dried by hanging, laying flat or rack dried. Do not dry clean. CAUTION: ALWAYS TEST BEFORE USING IN PRODUCTION
